A district court judge stripped of his law license by the N.C. State Bar on Friday will not hear cases as scheduled today after all.

Judge James Ethridge, who has served the district that covers Johnston, Harnett and Lee counties, has been replaced at the urging of the body that oversees state courts, according to Judge Albert Corbett, the chief judge of the district.

Corbett said Ralph Walker, head of the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts, advised him not to allow Ethridge to hold court while he waits to be formally disbarred.

"This is a very hard decision," Corbett said.

The state bar's disciplinary commission found that Ethridge defrauded an ailing retired teacher by taking her home and life savings when he was her attorney. The commission voided his law license Friday night, a decision that cost him his job as a judge. Ethridge was elected a district judge in 2004.
