Nineteen professors from Triangle universities have signed a letter asking Wake County School Superintendent Del Burns to meet with them to discuss an incident at Enloe High School in which a teacher brought in a guest speaker who denounced Islam.

The signers are mostly Muslim, and they teach at UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State University and Shaw University.

"We should not allow the faith of our students to be impacted by the preferences of their teachers," the letter says.

Their signers refer to an incident on Feb. 15 in which Enloe High School social studies teacher Robert Escamilla invited a Christian evangelist to his classrooms. The evangelist, Kamil Solomon urged students to shun Muslims and handed out pamphlets titled, "Do Not Marry a Muslim Man," and "Jesus, Not Muhammad."

The Wake County School System has suspended Escamilla until it completes an investigation into the incident.

In its letter, the academics state: "We are keenly interested to learn of the measures taken by the WCPSS to prevent such an incident from ever happening again."
