A hardy fish, the crappie also is a prolific spawner. Females spawn with different males over several nests, and males guard the nests until the eggs hatch and the young leave.

BLACK: Pomoxis nigromaculatus has seven or eight dorsal spines; thrives in Piedmont reservoirs and Coastal Plain rivers

WHITE: Pomoxis annularis can be identified by presence of five or six dorsal spines; prefers more turbid waters
