Knowledge Is Power Program schools have different approaches, but all work to educate students who live in low-income communities and are often minorities. The schools use guidelines called the Five Pillars. Those are:

1. High Expectations: Clearly defined and measurable high expectations for academic achievement and conduct that make no excuses based on the students' backgrounds.

2. Choice & Commitment: Students, their parents and the faculty choose to participate in the program.

3. More Time: With an extended day, week and year, students have more time to acquire skills that prepare them for competitive high schools and colleges.

4. Power to Lead: Principals have control over their school budget and personnel. They are free to swiftly move dollars or make staffing changes.

5. Focus on Results: Relentless focus on high student performance on standardized tests and other objective measures.
