* The Web site for the NaAlaHele Trail & Access System, www.hawaiitrails.org, run by Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources, includes maps and trail descriptions for six Hawaiian islands. Most resorts offer online access for a small fee.

* "101 Things To Do" magazine. Though chock full of ads for the various tours available on Maui, many of the 101 things to do you can do on your own. Examples: No. 44, explore Iao Valley, dubbed by Mark Twain "The Yosemite of the Pacific" and No. 64, Stroll Through a Botanical Garden. An online version is available at www.101thingstodo.com. It's also a good jumping off point if you're interested in finding out about guided tours on the island.

* "Haleakala: A Guide to the Mountain," by Cameron B. and Angela Kay Kepler ($9.95, Mutual Publishing). The best true exploring on the island is at Haleakala National Park, dominated by a youthful (though quiet) 800,000-year-old volcano that rises 10,000 feet above sea level. Time kept me from exploring the park, so I visited it vicariously in this colorfully illustrated 96-page guide.
