FOOD BANK HOLDING DRIVE TO PAY FOR HIGHER FUEL COSTS
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, a nonprofit organization that provides food for people who are hungry in 34 counties in central and Eastern North Carolina, is holding a fuel drive this month to raise money to keep its trucks on the road as it deals with a 61 percent increase in diesel fuel expenses.
The nonprofit agency hopes to raise $25,000, or enough money to cover its fuel costs for a month. It reports its fleet of 22 trucks cover 1,500 miles on average a day, delivering to more than 200 partner agencies in a service territory of 19,000 square miles.
The agency is accepting donations on its Web site and has set up a way for contributors to send e-cards to family and friends who might also want to help. The Web site also includes stories from Food Bank drivers about their work.
