Three storage tanks buried under a sea of black asphalt will help the N.C. State Fair be more green.
The state completed installation last week on three 1,000-gallon tanks for storing used oil from the great grease buffet that is the fair midway. The oil will be collected, converted into biodiesel fuel and used to power machinery on the state's research farms and trucks that make food deliveries to schools.
Between Oct. 16 and Oct. 26, the fair will collect about 8,000 gallons of used oil.
It's one of several efforts managers of the fairground and the midway have made to reduce the annual event's impact on the environment.
