Fourteen people were arrested for trespassing at Johnston County Airport this morning after they gathered to protest the use of the airport by a company that reportedly shuttles prisoners for the CIA.
The protesters walked around a barbed wire fence, hung a sign at the offices of Aero Contractors Ltd. and then sat in a circle to pray before being arrested. The sign accused Aero Contractors of being a "CIA Torture Taxi."
According to press reports, Aero planes have been used on secret missions to take terrorist suspects from one country to another for interrogation, including countries that routinely use torture.
The 14 protesters included eight from the Triangle, five from St. Louis and one from Chicago, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Department. They had announced their plans to protest, so sheriff's deputies were waiting with handcuffs and a van.
