WHO'S A 'STARBUCKS REPUBLICAN'?
Here's a quick profile of "Starbucks Republicans" provided by Dave Beattie, who came up with the phrase:
LOCATION: Mostly in the suburbs and exurbs, but some are found in gentrified sections of the inner city.
AGE: Younger then the average, 55-year-old voter.
GENDER: About 55 percent to 60 percent female.
INCOME: Middle class to upper middle class.
FISCAL POLITICS: They support lower taxes but are anxious about the federal deficit.
SOCIAL POLITICS: Pro-choice and not anti-gay.
OTHER POLITICS: Pro-environment, especially when it comes to sprawl. Concerned about the economy, health care and the price of gas.
RELIGION: Many of them attend church, but they are more secular than fundamentalist.
BLOODLINES: They trusted President Bush and voted for him in 2004.
GOP SUBURBAN AGENDA
Here a quick look at the Republican suburban agenda. It includes bills that would:
* Link databases to ensure pedophiles are not hired as teachers or coaches.
* Allow parents to establish tax-advantaged savings accounts for their children to help pay for education or to purchase a first home.
* Protect children from online predators who troll such Web sites as MySpace.com.
* Establish federal guidelines for electronic medical records.
* Fight the emergence of suburban drug gangs.
* Establish local grant programs to protect suburban open space.
* Create tax breaks for charitable donations of open space.
