DURHAM -- Durham residents could face a substantial tax increase next year.
City Manager Patrick Baker unveiled a recommended budget for the 2007 fiscal year today that includes a 3.75 cent property tax hike.
If approved by the City Council, Baker's proposal would bring the city's tax rate to 62.05 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The increase would raise the annual tax bill on a $150,000 home by $56.25 to $930.75.
In a letter included with his proposed budget, Baker said the hike would raise about $6 million needed to maintain the current level of bus service by the Durham Area Transit Authority, increase funding for the police department, pay increased fuel costs and cover increasing payments on the city's debt.
