A Youngsville teenager has won a national high school chess championship in suburban Chicago.

North Carolina state high school champion Nelson Lopez Jr., beat a Colorado player Friday by winning five out of six rounds and drawing on the sixth in the Denker tournament, said Randy Wheeless, vice president of the N.C. Chess Association.

Lopez, who also won the state title last year, was competing in Oakbrook, Ill., this weekend in a national tournament open to anyone, Wheeless said.

The Web site of the U.S. Chess Foundation, which reported Lopez's Denker victory, said he'll attend University of Texas at Dallas in the fall. The school has the nation's top collegiate chess program, Wheeless said.
