WUNC-FM has taken the first major step in turning "The Story With Dick Gordon" into a national show.
American Public Media, a division of Minnesota Public Radio, announced Friday that it would co-produce and distribute the Gordon show, which is produced at WUNC's studios at UNC-Chapel Hill. American Public Media produces and distributes "Marketplace" and "A Prairie Home Companion," which air on WUNC.
The announcement was made at the Public Radio Programmer's Association in Philadelphia, where Gordon and Joan Siefert Rose, general manager of WUNC (91.5-FM), were pitching the show to program directors from all over the country.
Rose said that in the next few weeks, she hopes to get commitments from three to five stations in top 50 markets -- as well as smaller-market stations -- to carry the show starting in January.
"It's not the case where we flip a switch and suddenly 200 stations carry the show," she said.
Gordon is a broadcast veteran best known as the host of "The Connection," which was produced by WBUR in Boston. After WBUR canceled the show in August 2005, WUNC brought Gordon to the Triangle to start a new show. "The Story With Dick Gordon," which went on the air as a weekly program in February, now airs daily at 1 p.m.
