SMITHFIELD -- Police now think that an apparent abduction from a Wal-Mart parking lot last week may have been a teenage prank.
Smithfield police are still looking for a man who appeared to have been stuffed into the trunk of a sedan in a Wal-Mart parking lot Thursday. Several people called the police about 7:10 p.m. Thursday to report that a young man had been abducted by three men from the Wal-Mart at 1299 N. Brightleaf Blvd. Witnesses said the men sped off in a light gold, four-door Toyota or Nissan.
But Smithfield Police Capt. Joe Cuddington said Monday that several witnesses have since told investigators that the victim was "laughing and not resisting."
Police have not received a report that anyone is missing.
"The way things are coming along makes us think it was some teenage boys playing around," Cuddington said.
Police are still investigating the case and urging anyone with information to call (919) 934-2121.
