RALEIGH -- A West Virginia company has issued a recall of egg salad that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced.
The recall is for Ballard's Farm Egg Salad sold in 12-ounce containers with the code "Best Used By 11/07/06."
The product is sold at Wal-Mart and other food retailers in North Carolina. The department's Food and Drug Protection Division initiated the recall after a routine survey sample collected at a Wake County Wal-Mart tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The department has received no reports of illnesses associated with the egg salad.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
