FORT BRAGG -- Patriot surface-to-air missiles were added to the permanent arsenal Tuesday at Fort Bragg as the first pieces of equipment arrived at an air defense battalion.

The missiles are designated for the 3rd Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery, the air defense unit that once was part of the 82nd Airborne Division but separated from it during a reorganization of the Army. It now is part of the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, expected to move to Fort Bragg next year from Fort Bliss, Texas.

Before the Patriots arrived, the battalion was equipped with short-range Avenger missiles for anti-aircraft use.

Now, the battalion will provide defense against threats ranging from unmanned drones to ballistic missiles, officials said.
