Gregg Jarvies, the chief of police in Chapel Hill over the last seven years, has announced he will retire April 1.
Jarvies, who has worked for the Chapel Hill Police Department for 31 years, said he decided to step down to devote more time to his family.
He announced his retirement in a memo to Town Manager Roger Stancil on Wednesday. The town released a copy of the memo this morning.
"My decision to retire is based not so much on professional reasons but personal," Jarvies wrote. "It has been an honor to dedicate myself fully to the needs of the town and the department since 1975.
"My family has sacrificed a great deal to ensure that I have been able to focus my energy on these needs, especially during my seven years' service as chief. Now is the right time for me to begin to make plans to dedicate myself to other opportunities, including those of import to my family."
Stancil says he plans to ask the N.C. League of Municipalities to help find a successor for Jarvies. He said he expects to conduct a nationwide search for candidates and have someone in place by the time Jarvies leaves.
