Social studies teacher Robert Escamilla was suspended with pay earlier this week after he invited a Christian evangelist to speak to his classroom, sparking outrage from students and parents.

Wake County Schools spokesman Michael Evans said Escamilla, a teacher at Enloe High School, will remain suspended until the end of the investigation into the Feb. 15 appearance by Kamil Solomon. Solomon, an Egyptian-born Raleigh evangelist, denounced Islam during his appearance and handed out pamphlets titled "Do Not Marry a Muslim," and "Jesus Not Muhammad."

Escamilla has been teaching in the Wake County schools since 1989.

"They seem to be taking this seriously," said Tariq Butt, a Muslim, whose daughter, Saira, attends Enloe High School. "I hope they come out with a final resolution so that we can decide what to do next, if anything."
