Martin Lancaster, president of the N.C. community college system, announced today that he plans to retire in a little more than a year.
Lancaster, who has led the system since 1997, told members of the State Board of Community Colleges that the advance notice will give them time to select a new president and allow for an orderly transition.
The system’s second-in-command, Executive Vice President Fred Williams, also announced his retirement plans today. Williams will step down Sept. 1.
Lancaster told the board that the staggered departures of the two leaders will permit the next president to serve in William’s post before moving into the top post.
“There comes a time for Fred and me to ride off into the sunset,” Lancaster said.
