CHAPEL HILL -- Quirky grocer Trader Joe's has signed a lease to open in Eastgate Shopping Center, in the former home of the Earthfare natural foods chain.

Known for its casually clad staff and extensive offerings under the Trader Joe name, the grocer plans to open the 13,000-square-foot Chapel Hill store by late fall.

According to Supermarket News, Trader Joe's is the nation's 27th biggest food retailer, with $5 billion in sales in 2006. Just four spots ahead? Whole Foods Market, with $5.6 billion in sales -- and a popular store just down the block in Chapel Hill.
