Marine from Lejeune killed in Iraq combat

closeA Camp Lejeune Marine from the small northern Alabama town of Athens was killed in the Anbar province of Iraq, the Pentagon announced Saturday.
Lance Cpl. Adam E. Loggins, 27, died Thursday, about a week after his father, Danny Loggins, became the fire chief in nearby Huntsville.
Loggins was one of three Marines who died during combat in Anbar, west of Baghdad, on Thursday. The Pentagon announced Friday that another Camp Lejeune Marine, Cpl. Willie P. Celestine Jr., 22, of Lafayette, La., was also killed, but it had not released the name of the third.

Their deaths mean that 89 U.S. service members have died in Iraq this month, the deadliest in 2007 for U.S. forces in the Middle East.
Loggins, a graduate of East Limestone High School, had been in Iraq for about two months as a member of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. His brother, Josh Loggins, is a private first class in the Army, undergoing training in Hawaii, according to The News Courier newspaper in Athens.
Athens Mayor Dan Williams told the paper that he had recently met Danny Loggins, a 32-year veteran of the Huntsville Fire & Rescue Department.
"To see a man happy about his new job and then have the worst tragedy ever to befall him," Williams said. "They're a nice family, and we hope everybody will pray for them."
