SCIENCE FAIR: Three entrants from Enloe High School are among nine area students who will compete May 13 to 18 in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, N.M. Anusuya Ramasubramanian, Hung-Bing Tan and Benjamin Wang researched a potential coating of carbon nanotubes to improve the flow of liquid through small pipes.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Adams Elementary School in Cary is looking for volunteers to work in its library. Assistance is needed in the following areas: helping students with computer projects, preparing displays and bulletin boards, filing and shelving, fundraising, database entry and circulation. BANNER MAKERS: Brier Creek Elementary School's PTA is looking for volunteers to help make machine-stitched applique classroom banners for the teachers. No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. If interested, contact Ceciel Rooker at cecielrooker@yahoo.com.

ARTS FINALISTS: Three Wake County students were finalists in the local district of the National Congressional High School Arts Competition. Area students competed to have their art displayed in the U.S. Capitol and the Washington and Raleigh offices of U.S. Rep. David Price. The students were asked to submit paintings, drawings, collage, photography and computer-generated art.

Erika Tierney-James of Leesville Road High School won first place, and her work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. She will travel to a national reception in Washington this summer.

Phillipa Armes, also of Leesville Road High, finished second, and her work will hang in Price's Washington office.

Paige Lawall of Apex High was third, and her work will be displayed in Price's office in Raleigh.

BLUE RIBBON DAY: Davis Drive Elementary School Principal Patricia Andrews and a group of students and teachers will take hot-air balloon rides Friday between 5:30 and 8 p.m. to culminate a week-long event celebrating the school's national achievement as a Blue Ribbon School. Davis Drive is one of only five in North Carolina and the only one from Wake County to have received the recognition twice.

PRIZE ESSAY: Christine Zagrobelny of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh has won a $1,000 college scholarship for writing the best essay from North Carolina in the National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Peace. She'll join other state winners in Washington for a week-long program focusing on international conflict resolution. About 4,000 students entered the contest and wrote on the topic "Youth and Violent Conflict."

MCDONALD'S GRANT: Anna Petrova of Middle Creek High School has won a $1,000 Ronald McDonald House Charities scholarship for academic and community achievement. She has been involved in a number of activities, including the cross-country team and the Key Club, and has maintained a 4.3 grade-point average.

COKE SCHOLAR: Ryan Dowd, a senior at Green Hope High School in Morrisville, has been awarded a $20,000 National Coca-Cola Scholarship for college. The selection committee evaluated students on their academic achievements, school and community leadership, and desire to succeed.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: Sara Nickalson of Garner High School has won one of five scholarships from the N.C. Police Executives Association. Her father, Barry Nickalson, works for the Cary Police Department. Sara recently posted a 4.4 grade-point average and is involved in a variety of activities, including student government, the International Baccalaureate Program, and the golf and clogging teams.
