Help SAFEchild Protect Children

What is SAFEchild?
Established in 1992 by the Junior League of Raleigh, SAFEchild is a not-for-profit child abuse prevention agency committed to eliminating child abuse in Wake County by helping adults and children create nurturing environments free from abuse and neglect.

What does the group do?
Over its 15 year history, SAFEchild has developed a range of programs to partner with families to help them be successful through parent/caregiver education, individual one-to-one support, and group support. The organization is guided by the belief that all children have a fundamental right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

How can you help?
Volunteer opportunities for English and Spanish speakers include: mentoring new mothers, leading parent education groups, facilitating children’s groups, and conducting public student education sessions. All volunteers receive support, supervision, and training.

N&O Volunteer
Jackie Stark

If responsibility for the best interests of all News & Observer employees was not enough, VP of Human Resources Jackie Stark volunteers her time with SAFEchild’s nurturing program in addition to sitting on the organization’s Executive Board. When presented with the invitation to get involved, as a person always interested in working with children, Jackie seized on the opportunity to make a difference.

As a board member, Jackie works to raise money to facilitate SAFEchild programs. Serving as a volunteer, she works with 4-8 year olds to foster respectful behavior for others - as well as themselves - through roleplaying exercises, age-appropriate education, and traditional arts and crafts. “Participating in the volunteer program has been very rewarding,” she says enthusiastically. “The kids look forward to seeing you and you look forward to seeing them, too.”

Project Hope

A message from the publisher

The News & Observer has a long history of helping the community, through its journalism and its corporate or philanthropic support. We take our public service responsibilities seriously and fulfill them in many ways.

Perhaps you've seen some of our efforts. Recently, we have collected donations for hurricane victims. We participate in and support the Triangle United Way campaign. We are actively involved in the arts community. Our annual Kids Day project raises money for children's health services at WakeMed. And our employees volunteer at Triangle animal shelters, food banks, youth programs, literacy programs and many more organizations that build and improve our communities.

This year, The N&O will celebrate those good works with a new campaign called Project Hope.

Please watch for Project Hope ads in The N&O and our community publications during November and December. You'll meet some of our employees, see the ways they're helping make the Triangle a better place and have an opportunity to contribute to the organizations and causes for which they have such passion.

We're proud of our employees and delighted to highlight their service to our community.
