Rex Healthcare will move forward with a 45-bed expansion after the state approved its request for additional beds.
The new beds will be added to Rex's main hospital on Lake Boone Trail and will bring that facility's total to 433 beds.
Last year, Rex and WakeMed got into a dispute after Rex opposed WakeMed's plan to add 102 beds to its Cary and Raleigh hospitals. WakeMed won approval for that plan last spring, but was only able to move ahead after Rex withdrew its opposition in August, clearing the way for its own expansion plans.
