MAIDEN -- Carolina Mills, which employed 2,600 people just six years ago, will close its three remaining plants, putting 300 people out of work.

The 78-year-old company said it will end all domestic yarn manufacturing by June 30. That means the closing of plants in Maiden, Lincolnton and Statesville. Carolina Mills then will employ fewer than 100 people, most likely at its corporate headquarters in Maiden, to focus on smaller-scale, high-tech manufacturing; international sales and sourcing; distribution and logistical services; and other non-textile-related businesses.

The company blamed several factors for the plant closings, including low-cost imported products, rising health-care costs and the rising cost of fuel and petroleum-based textile fibers.
