The new corporate parent of software maker NetIQ closed the company's Durham office Monday, laying off 50 workers.
Seattle-based Attachmate broke out the pink slips less than a week after it bought NetIQ, which is based in San Jose, Calif., for $495 million in stock. The combined company is cutting costs by consolidating its research and development centers.
Employees who were let go will receive severance packages, said Attachmate spokeswoman Susanne Smith. While no employees have been offered relocation packages, they may still apply for open positions at other Attachmate offices, she said.
The local workers' "functions will be transitioning to other locations," Smith added.
NetIQ acquired the Morrisville offices of Ganymede Software in 2000. In July 2002, NetIQ employed 80 people in Morrisville. It later moved its local offices to Durham.
Merging NetIQ's security management systems and Attachmate's computer integration software affects customer such as Audi, Bank of America, ExxonMobil, Lufthansa, Mary Kay and Raytheon, among others.
"Our combination unites two market leaders," said Attachmate CEO Jeff Hawn in a statement.
