Lenovo will eliminate 350 jobs in Morrisville as part of worldwide layoffs of 1,400 employees.

The local employees, mostly in Lenovo’s global supply chain and software testing, are being notified today and will be laid off over the next 30 to 45 days. The cuts represent 20 percent of the company’s 1,700 Triangle employees.

The Morrisville computer manufacturer said the layoffs are designed to enhance business performance and accelerate profitable growth. Lenovo has been trying to shape up IBM’s money-losing personal computer business, which had 1,800 Triangle employees, since acquiring it for $1.25 billion in 2005.

About 750 of the 1,400 jobs will be moved to emerging markets closer to Lenovo’s suppliers and manufacturing operations, the company said. A spokesman couldn’t say how many of those would be from the Triangle.
