Anyone looking to snag a new one-of-a-kind Holly Aiken bag might want to hit the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences' Planet Earth Celebration on Saturday.
Aiken has been busy in her Glenwood South studio creating a limited edition line of handbags and wallets from the vinyl outdoor banners the museum has used to advertise exhibits over the years.
The science museum staff approached Aiken with the idea last month, giving her 50 banners from the last seven years, including ones publicizing the Titanic, space and dinosaurs exhibits.
Because of the size and number of banners, no two bags will look alike, Aiken says. And besides being recycled, the bags also are waterproof.
Aiken says she'll make about 50 open-top messenger bags and 50 wallets. Bags will sell for $88, wallets for $42. Find the bags for sale at the celebration Saturday or after in the museum gift shop. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Museum.
You have another chance to go "green" this week. Starting Thursday, Uniquities is having its first Green Designer Week.
Store owner Julie Jennings has brought in new lines for the event. Among them: organic T-shirts by C&C California that have biodegradable paper tags with wildflower seeds in them, and the J Brand Green Label of jeans -- including The Monroe in Haight for curvy Marilyn-like figures -- made from organic cotton.
Customers also will get a reusable Uniquities tote with purchase. And anyone who brings the bag when shopping will get $2 off a purchase.
Are you woman enough?Another line new to the area, Tuleh, will make its debut Tuesday and Wednesday when Tuleh's president Marco Cattoretti comes to Vermillion in North Hills for a trunk show of the fall and pre-fall collection.
What kind of customer does the company aim to attract? The strong, Southern type, says Tuleh designer Bryan Bradley.
"She knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to look pretty and sexy and feminine," Bradley says. "Confident is really a key word, both for the clothes and the woman."
Bradley says the fall looks are more relaxed than the spring selections with rich velvets, printed chiffons and popular knits in dresses, suits and separates. "It's more rock 'n' roll."
The coats, however, are among his favorites. "They're a lot of fashion for not a lot of work," he says. They also struck store owner Ashley Vermillion Harris. She says a glittery red one is destined to make any fall outfit come alive.
What sold her overall on the line, which is new to her store and the area this fall, is the broad appeal, with its potential interest from the edgy contemporary type to the sophisticated socialite. Or, in celebrity terms, from Madonna to Estee Lauder executive Aerin Lauder, who are both said to be fans of Tuleh.
"I love how he is a downtown designer designing for the uptown girl," Harris says.
