Karen Werle Lee, founder of Carolina Life Coaching in Raleigh, says about 70 percent of her clients are individuals who want more from their jobs but need help sorting out what they really want to do. She offers this advice for those looking to change direction later in their careers:

  • Develop a sound financial plan. Know how much money you need to cover living expenses and how long it will take to attain your desired income. Smart saving will guarantee that you have the necessary reserves during the transition. Consider working with an accountant or financial planner.
  • Focus on your passion. You need to have a specific path in order to channel your energies into making it happen. Research your choice, and make sure it is viable.
  • Develop a strong support system. Brainstorm strategies with family, friends and co-workers. Their ideas, encouragement and backing can be invaluable when the going gets difficult.
  • Take the leap. You can start the process by taking one step in the direction you've chosen -- by taking a class, joining a group or volunteering in that area. Once you've taken that step, stay positive and keep going.
