After years of deflecting questions about his sexuality, Raleigh-born pop star Clay Aiken has announced that he is gay in the newest issue of People magazine.

Aiken, 29, shot to fame during the second season of "American Idol." A graduate of Leesville Road High School and UNC-Charlotte, Aiken recently fathered a child with Jaymes Foster, a music-industry veteran. The couple conceived the child through in vitro fertilization.

Last week, the singer returned to the Broadway stage, playing the role of Sir Robin in "Monty Python's Spamalot."
