'Lio" is quiet. He's offbeat. He's somewhat dark. And he's our "guest comic" for the next four weeks.

It's hard to sum up the comic strip "Lio" in words -- mainly because there are no words in "Lio." Artist Mark Tatulli calls it a "pantomime strip." The humor comes from the images. Think "Calvin and Hobbes" blended with "The Addams Family," with a little Marcel Marceau thrown in.

There's nothing else out there like it, which makes "Lio" ripe for a tryout.

Remember, we're using the old "Foxtrot" spot at the top of our first comics page to give strips a four-week test. Please share your thoughts in our forum at www.newsobserver.com, key word lifestyles.

If reader response is positive enough, we'll consider making the guest comic a permanent fixture. That's what's happening with "Pickles," our first guest comic. Readers were overwhelmingly enthusiastic, so it's joining our mix for good starting today.

You'll find "Pickles" in the former "Edge City" spot. "Edge City" -- one of the new strips introduced in November -- didn't live up to our expectations.

The next tryout, starting Feb. 26, will be "Sherman's Lagoon."

For now, enter the unusual world of "Lio," and let us know what you think.
