RALEIGH -- Several hundred people gathered on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh this morning to see a live broadcast of the CBS "Early Show," featuring a mini concert by Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby.
Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards brought campaign signs, hoping for a few seconds of national air time. Others waved signs promoting a proposal to save the campus of Dorothea Dix hospital for green space.
"Early Show" anchor Hannah Storm and weatherman Dave Price made the trip from New York to host the show from Raleigh.
The program opened with a broad reference to Raleigh's "barbecue, NASCAR and bluegrass," though the city has never been known for race-car driving. At one point, Storm dropped in a "y'all."
The program also featured a cooking segment with Angus Barn chef Walter Royal.
Babs Holtzman made the 70-minute drive from Ridgeway in Warren County to hold up a sign advertising the town's annual canteloupe festival. She said she hoped people would see the sign and come to the festival.
"We're trying to preserve the history of the area," she said.
