SHOW: "High School Musical 2," 8 p.m. today, repeating at various times Saturday and Sunday, Disney Channel.

DID YOU KNOW? Efron's parents encouraged him to audition for a school production when he was 11, and he soon fell in love with acting and singing. He took part in a production of "Gypsy" that ran 90 performances and appeared in regional productions of "Peter Pan," "Auntie Mame," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Music Man." Growing up in California, Efron was able to build on his stage experience with small parts in TV series, including "ER," The Guardian" and "Firefly" and a recurring role as girl-crazy Cameron Bale on "Summerland."

LIFE OFF-SCREEN: Efron, 19, was born in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He lives in L.A. and enjoys skateboarding, surfing and playing video games.

FIND ONLINE: On the "Hairspray" soundtrack, Efron, who plays Link, sings "Ladies' Choice," a song written especially for the movie. You can also find DVDs of "High School Musical" and "The Derby Stallion."
