Wildlife Federation certification

Hallie and Harry Wilson's habitat is certified by the National Wildlife Federation and the N.C. Wildlife Federation. North Carolina is one of only two states with a joint certification program, says Tim Gestwicki, deputy director of conservation programs with the N.C. Wildlife Federation.

North Carolina has 3,000 certified wildlife habitats, ranging in size from patio gardens to thousands of acres, he says. Most are created by homeowners who enjoy America's two favorite pastimes -- gardening and bird-watching. But the federation also offers certification for industries, schools, churches and coastal island communities. Detailed information is available at https://secure.nwf.org/backyardwildlifehabitat/certify/dspPartners.cfm.

The habitats help defray the loss of cropland and forest land converted to development. According to the Conservation Trust for North Carolina, from 1982 to 2002, that amounted to a loss of 2.8 million acres, at a rate of 383 acres each day.

"Those numbers aren't going to decrease," Gestwicki says.
