Put me in charge, and these are the first three things I'd do to boost Raleigh's soul:
1. Expand on the notion that downtown can be a place where folks from all over the city gather and get to know one another. First Night and the New Year's Eve acorn drop embrace this idea. We need another signature event.
2. Work to attract interesting meetings and conventions to town. If the new convention center attracts only waves and waves of dudes in suits, our soul will suffer.
3. The new Fayetteville Street is beautiful, but the sea of gray planters along the sidewalks gives a bland, Pottery Barn-feel to the street. I'd parcel out the planters to kids and arts groups, who could decorate them as they see fit. Maybe we could figure out a way to use the planters to raise money for a good cause.
