RALEIGH — Wake Superior Court Judge Evelyn W. Hill has been immediately suspended from the bench by the order of N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake Jr.
In an order issued today, Lake wrote, "The immediate suspension of Judge Hill is necessary for the proper administration of justice in that it appears her persistent intemperance demonstrates a continous, habitual pattern of misconduct in office. ... This suspension serves to maintain the honor and dignity of the judiciary and the proper administration of justice."
All of Hill's court assignments will be assigned to other judges, effective Monday, according to Lake's order. Earlier this week, a third round of judicial ethics charges were made public against Hill, who has already twice been censured.
In the recent complaint from judicial standards, Hill is accused of not hiding her "disdain" for two defense lawyers in front of juries. In one case, the N.C. Court of Appeals found that Hill's conduct so prejudiced the jury during a 2003 trial that it granted a new trial to the defendant — a convicted sex offender.
