SMITHFIELD -- Johnston County and the town of Smithfield voted Monday to grant satellite dish-maker Andrew Corp. nearly half a million dollars in economic incentives over the next five years.

The county and town negotiated to keep the company in Smithfield. Andrew had planned to relocate to Goldsboro, a move that would have netted $3.9 million in state and local tax breaks.

The package approved Monday by the town and county boards will help cover the costs of a planned expansion that will add $10 million to the county and town tax bases and more than 200 jobs, according to county economic development director Michael de Sherbinin.

Johnston County will refund $263,446 in tax receipts over five years, and Smithfield will refund $192,518 under the plan.
