DURHAM -- Five of the 21 pages of the attorney general's report are devoted to a narrative of how the lacrosse team party unfolded March 13-14, 2006.
The narrative amounts to the definitive official account of the party at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd. Here's a condensed version. Not all the participants were named in the report, but they have been clearly identified in investigative documents:
Co-captain Dan Flannery called an escort service March 13, gave a fake name and booked two white dancers for a bachelor party. A first dancer, Kim Roberts, arrived on time, shortly after 11 p.m.
After Flannery made three calls to the escort service, a second dancer, Crystal Gail Mangum, arrived 40 minutes late. Mangum was unsteady on her feet.
The players agreed the performance should proceed, even though the dancers weren't white. The performance began about midnight; Mangum remained unsteady and soon fell on the carpet.
Some "sexual banter" took place between Roberts and some players. One player held up a broomstick and suggested using it as a sex toy. Angered, Roberts stopped performing and shut herself in a bathroom with Mangum. The time was about 12:05 a.m.
Reade Seligmann, one of the players Mangum later accused of raping her, made several phone calls, including to his girlfriend and a taxi company. He and a friend got into the taxi at 12:19 and were driven to a bank, a fast-food restaurant and their dorm.
Collin Finnerty, whom Mangum also accused, left while the dancers were still at the party house and went to a house around the corner. A friend called looking for Finnerty at 12:27, and they met at the second house. Finnerty ordered pizza by phone, then canceled the order and walked across campus with friends to eat at the Cosmic Cantina at 12:56.
At the party, players complained they got five minutes of performance for two hours' pay and wanted a refund or more performing. The women left the bathroom and went outside; Flannery and Evans followed and talked to them by Roberts' car, apologizing and asking them to return.
When the dancers returned through the back door, several players apologized for their teammate's comments. When Roberts saw Peter Lamade, who made the broomstick remark, she became angry and locked herself in the bathroom with Mangum again.
As Flannery tried to coax the women from the bathroom, Evans and another captain, Matt Zash, urged others to leave. Two players had taken money from Mangum's purse; Evans and Flannery told them to return it.
The women left again just before 12:30, and Zash locked the back door. Roberts went to her car, and Mangum banged on the back door, trying to get inside. A player videotaped her in the back yard, stumbling and talking disjointedly and telling one player, "I'm a cop." A photo showed her lying on the back porch. Flannery helped her to Roberts' car.
As they were leaving, Roberts yelled a sexual and racial insult at players across the street on Duke's East Campus. One or more responded with racial epithets. Roberts drove off with Mangum.
