Hassan Adams' leadership was even more important to Arizona than his solid shooting.

Back from a two-game suspension, Adams scored 21 points and Ivan Radenovic added 18, leading the eighth-seeded Wildcats to a 94-75 win over No. 9 seed Wisconsin in the Minneapolis Regional on Friday.

Mustafa Shakur had 17 points and nine assists, and Arizona advanced behind tough defense and outstanding shooting.

"It was tough last week without Hassan," Wildcats coach Lute Olson said. "He's a great competitor. The more there is on the line, the better he plays. He's a winner. We need his leadership. It was great to have him back."

Adams missed two games in the Pac-10 Tournament because the senior was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. He shot 10-for-14 in 23 minutes.

ALSO FRIDAY

AT PHILADELPHIA

VILLANOVA 58, MONMOUTH 45: Playing at home as a No. 1 seed didn't earn Villanova a breather.

Pushed by a pesky Monmouth team aiming to pull off an unprecedented upset, the top-seeded Wildcats prevailed and beat the Hawks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The crowd seemed to abandon the Wildcats (26-4), along with their accurate shooting and smart decision-making. Villanova looked nothing like the team that shared the Big East title with Connecticut.

Still, Allan Ray returned from a scary eye injury to score 19 points, Randy Foye added 17 points and the Wildcats advanced to play eighth-seeded Arizona on Sunday.

AT DAYTON, OHIO

GEORGETOWN 54, NORTHERN IOWA 49: John Thompson hugged the 7-foot-2 center who had just led Georgetown to another first-round NCAA Tournament win, energetically slapping his broad back. How many times has this happened? A lot, but not lately.

Roy Hibbert scored 17 points and seventh-seeded Georgetown relied on its clampdown defense for a victory over Northern Iowa -- the Hoyas' first NCAA tourney victory in five years.

OHIO STATE 70, DAVIDSON 62: Ohio State had four trips to the NCAA Tournament erased last week. Ron Lewis made this one count.

Stung by the NCAA punishment, Ohio State regrouped in its tournament opener behind an excellent performance by Lewis.

He was in the middle of almost every play during a second-half surge that led the second-seeded Buckeyes over Davidson.

Terence Dials had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and J.J. Sullinger chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Buckeyes.
