West rolls past East in McDonald's game

Duke recruit Henderson nets 16 in loss

Kevin Durant scored 25 points Wednesday night to carry the West to a 112-94 win over the East in the McDonald's All-American high school boys' basketball game.

The 6-foot-10 Durant, heading to Texas, scored 11 of his points during a 17-0 run in the second half that gave the West an 89-76 lead with eight minutes left.

The East built an early 44-24 lead with help from Duke recruit Gerald Henderson, who scored 10 points in the run, but the West rallied to take a 55-48 halftime advantage. Henderson, of Blue Bell, Pa., led the East with 16 points.

UNC recruit Brandan Wright scored 12 points, while Thaddeus Young, who is headed to Georgia Tech, scored 14.

Durant, of Suitland, Md., was the game's co-MVP along with Chase Budinger of Encinitas, Calif., who had 11 points. He'll be attending Arizona.

Daequan Cook, an Ohio State recruit, scored 17 points.

Greg Oden, the 7-footer from Indianapolis who is also heading to Ohio State, had 10 points.

WEST 80, EAST 76: Stanford-bound Jayne Appel scored 12 points, had seven rebounds and blocked two shots as the West defeated the East in the McDonald's All-American high school girls' basketball game.

The 6-foot-4 Appel, from Pleasant Hill, Calif., was named the MVP. She hit three consecutive shots midway through the second half to give the West a 51-47 lead.

Dymon Simon, who is heading to Arizona State, scored 14 points, and Amanda Thompson had 11 points and nine rebounds for the West. Allison Hightower had nine rebounds and nine points. Abi Olajuwon, the daughter of former NBA MVP Hakeem Olajuwon, had eight points and five rebounds.

Virginia recruit Monica Wright led the East with 13 points while Tina Charles tallied 12, Ashley Houts 11 and Amber White 10.

Epiphanny Prince, who set a national record with 113 points in a game for Murry Bergtraum High School in New York last month, scored two points for the East.
