Defensive lineman Khalif Mitchell will not be enrolled and will not play football at North Carolina this fall because of off-the-field issues, coach John Bunting said on Thursday.
However, "there will be a distinct opportunity for him to come back,'' Bunting added.
The junior from Virginia Beach, Va., started two games as a freshman after playing a year for Hargrave Academy. As a sophomore last season, he recorded 13 tackles and four quarterback hurries and recovered two fumbles. He played in 11 games.
At 6 feet 6 and 297 pounds, he leaves a big hole to fill.
"We'll move Kentwan Balmer inside, and Cam Thomas .... is going to get playing time; he knows that," Bunting said. "We were expecting a big season out of Melik Brown, which allows us to move some people around.
"And I'm hopeful that one or two freshmen can help us outside or inside."
Also, tailback Antwain Carey has given up his football scholarship and will participate on UNC's track team next season, and walk-on running back R.J. Waters has transferred to Norfolk State.
Bunting said he expects everyone else from spring practice to be on hand for preseason drills next month.
