Davis deal worth about $1.72m annually

North Carolina released the details of Butch Davis' contract to serve as football coach today. Davis has a seven-year deal worth about $1.72 million annually.

The deal includes a base salary of $286,000 per season plus $25,000 in an annual expense account. Learfield Communications ($250,000) and Nike ($150,000) will supplement his income.

There are also standard bonuses for winning the ACC title, going to a bowl game and for graduation rates equal to or better than the student body.

The contract also includes a retention clause. According to UNC, the university will pay $100,000 into "a fund in each of the first five years and $300,000 in each of the last two years of the contract." The retention bonus is available only after Davis is the head coach for five years.
