A head-on collision in northern Chatham County killed a Durham woman Tuesday morning, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Janie Andrews, 68, was driving a 2005 Chrysler passenger car south on Big Woods Road near Jack Bennett Road around 10:45 a.m. when a Ford pickup truck heading the opposite direction crossed into the southbound lane and struck her car, Trooper J. Maynor said.

Andrews died at the scene, and another passenger, Lila Earp, 60, of Hillsborough, was injured and taken to UNC Hospitals, Maynor said. The Ford's driver, Michael Johnson, 48, of 5737 Cass Holt Road, Holly Springs, was also taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment.

Neither impaired driving nor excessive speeding appeared to be a factor in the accident, Maynor said, adding that he did not know why Johnson's car had crossed the center lane.

All three were wearing their seat belts, Maynor said.

A third vehicle traveling behind the Chrysler also was damaged. In an effort to avoid the head-on collision, the driver of that vehicle, a pickup truck, swerved off the road and swiped one of the other vehicles. That driver was treated at the scene.

No criminal charges had been filed late Tuesday afternoon, Maynor said.
