Breaking Ground in American Art

Sept. 21-Jan. 4, Ackland Art Museum, UNC-CH

Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein -- "Circa 1958: Breaking Ground in American Art" features enough pop art stars to attract a crowd. But the show runs deeper by charting the new channels that carried American art toward the 21st century, including Asheville native Kenneth Noland's color field painting (Noland's "That" appears below). "Circa 1958" also serves as a blow-out celebration of the museum's opening 50 years ago on Columbia Street in Chapel Hill. 966-5736, www.ackland.org.
