The Durham People’s Alliance has endorsed Durham County’s proposed 1 percent prepared-food tax, along with a full slate of candidates in the Nov. 4 general election.

According to a PA release, the tax endorsement came after “a well-informed and spirited debate” on its effect on private citizens and local government budgets.

Most of the tax receipts would come from restaurant meals. By law, the revenue may only be used for recreational and cultural facilities, marketing, beautification and workforce training.

The People’s Alliance also re-endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, and voted to support Democrats Bev Perdue for governor, Kay Hagan for U.S. Senate, David Price for U.S. Congress and Bob Atwater, Floyd McKissick, Larry Hall, Paul Luebke and H.M. Michaux for re-election to the state General Assembly.
