We have 6,000 of your photos on share.triangle.com, but one of my favorites -- and evidently yours -- is the haircut photo that was taken in 2006 of young Jamie Ping, who was here visiting relatives. You can see it at share.triangle.com/gallery/popular. It has been viewed more than 5,900 times.
We ran this picture in the Durham News last summer, but without the back story.
Anna MacDonald Dobbs, then a UNC photojournalism major in her senior year, was looking for a good picture.
So she camped out at Best Barber Shop in Durham, which has been operated by L.B. Wilmoth for the past 23 years. Anna says that Jamie's dad and uncle - twin brothers - had gotten haircuts from Wilmoth when they were growing up. Jamie's dad brought the youngster by for a trim that Saturday when Anna was there with her camera. Jamie had just been roused from a nap and was a little cranky about getting buzzed.
Anna, who grew up in Durham, is now enrolled in a four-year dual Duke-Carolina master's program in divinity and social work. Which, on a day when the Heels and the Blue Devils are playing at Cameron Indoor, must be a little conflicting. (See the last item below).
Mental disorder forumIt's still pretty active. So far, there have been more than 120 posts, some very lengthy, and more than 11,400 page views.
The story keeps on going, with Gov. Mike Easley's news conference Tuesday and the firing of Debbie Crane, the spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services. If you want to join in the conversation, go to share.triangle.com/mentaldisorder. You can also see our series at newsobserver.com.
Garbage disposalsThis week, the Raleigh City Council voted to ban new garbage disposals from being connected to the city's sewer system after March 17. This applies to towns that have merged their water and sewer systems with Raleigh, including Garner, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon. Graciously, the council has agreed to let you continue using your disposal if you have one. We've created a forum at share.triangle.com for your thoughts about this new policy. The comments on the forum so far have been running somewhat in opposition, to put it mildly. The city's position is that this is needed to help minimize sewer system overflows.
Memories of '83I was in Norfolk when N.C. State made its improbable run to the national championship, but I do remember watching Coach Valvano on TV running across the floor of The Pit in Albuquerque, looking for someone to hug after Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg's air ball (or spectacular pass?) and won the game just before the buzzer.
Share your memories about the 1983 Wolfpack season at share.triangle.com/83champs. There are a few beefs that have already broken out (yeah, big surprise that 25 years on and people are still arguing about Jimmy V, and will for the next 25 years) but there are also some good memories. Like the State fan who was in the service at the time and whose major was a Houston grad. The major was giving him the business before the game. Afterward, he gave the major a Wolfpack Club application and an NCSU Championship Coke.
Sunday's QSpeaking of sports: A while ago, as we approached the season of tournaments -- ACC, CIAA, MEAC, NCAA -- we thought it appropriate to ask what being a fan means to you. In Sunday's Citizen Q, we will run some of your responses.
I have read them and have drawn the conclusion that we could bump up our circulation if we ran more Red Sox news. I'm just saying.
