A sexual assault victim in Orange County may first seek medical attention, counseling or help from the police.
After a meeting today, all the agencies that help such victims have more knowledge of the roles of other parts of the support system.
Several representatives from the 15 agencies that make up the county's Sexual Assault Response Team met this morning to sign guidelines that spell out their respective roles.
"What we're hoping is that they'll ensure consistency," said Christina Riordan, executive director of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, which started the team and continues to coordinate it.
The multi-agency team began to meet in 2003 with funding from the Governor's Crime Commission. It has continued to meet since then and has spent the last two years creating these guidelines.
In coming months, the guidelines will be available on the Orange County Rape Crisis Center Web site at www.ocrcc.org
