Sen. Mitch McConnell, who will become the Republican leader of the Senate, has called on Democratic leaders in Congress to work for a long-term solution to financing Social Security.

Administration officials also have been talking about reaching an agreement with Democrats on keeping the program solvent. In the past, Bush called for private accounts that would let workers direct payroll taxes to investments in stocks or bonds, an idea the Democratic leadership of the House promises to fight.

McConnell has suggested Republicans in Congress might be flexible on this point.
