MCBRYDE BUILDING
SIZE: The building is 726 feet long, about two and a half times the length of a football field.
BUILT: Completed in 1856, partly rebuilt in 1926, partly demolished and rebuilt in 1951, expanded in 1975.
LOCATION: 820 Boylan Ave., in the middle of the campus.
NOTABLE FOR: Being a lost masterpiece. The original design of the building is considered a classic, but a fire and uninspiring additions have diluted its impact. Though its historic look has been compromised, the building is considered part of the Dix campus' national historic district.
PROPOSED USES: You name it. Plans have called for it to be restored to its 1856 appearance, rebuilt with a modern glass atrium or left essentially as-is. Private condominiums, senior housing, a museum, state offices and a restaurant have been suggested.
TRIVIA: The original plans are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
