Staff WriterApril 19, 2004

Interstate 40 in Johnston County has reopened this morning as authorities clear a wreck involving a gasoline tanker that exploded.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lane near the McGee's Crossroads community, the state Highway Patrol reported.

A Smithfield man was killed after midnight in a separate accident on eastbound I-40 in Johnston County, The Associated Press reported.

The state Highway Patrol said today one motorist was killed after driving westbound in the eastbound lanes, according to The AP. The car collided with another vehicle head-on, and the occupants of the second car are hospitalized.

As authorities investigated that accident near mile marker 319, troopers got a call on a second accident involving four trucks, The AP reported. A trooper said the second accident, which involved an explosion and fire, happened in stalled traffic caused by the first wreck.
