KARBALA, Iraq -- Heavy gunfire and huge explosions rumbled Thursday through this Shiite holy city as fighters loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr refused to end their standoff with U.S. forces, despite losing one of their main bases at a mosque.
